VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Vigo County Clerk’s office will take extra precautions to keep voters safe during the upcoming election through a partnership with SERVPRO.
During a press conference Tuesday, the clerk’s office announced SERVPRO will be fogging and sanitizing the county courthouse every week during the voting season.
Additionally, SERVPRO has offered to staff two employees at every vote center at no cost to the taxpayer.
“What will happen is as someone leaves the voting area obviously all high touch points will be wiped down,” Owner of SERVPRO Chad Overton said. “All of our employees will wear PPE as well during this process. And again the machines will be cleaned high touch points will be cleaned door knobs, restrooms water fountain bars.”
Vigo County Clerk Brad Newman plans on having a large voter turnout, but despite that Overton said cleaning will be relatively quick for each voting station.
“I would not think there would be any delays. I mean you know obviously it’s going to take a couple of minutes to wipe down that area. But again, it’s a rather fast process because there’s not a ton of hand touching if you will and the area obviously is extremely small.”
In order to help move voters through the process quickly, the Vigo County Clerks office set up what they called Super Vote Centers at North Vigo and South Vigo High Schools and West Vigo Middle School along with Meadows Banquet Center.
“With these super centers, we’ll have 15 -20 machines in each one of them,” Newman said. “There will be social distancing set up, we’ll have markers and people helping people in line so that they know how far to stay apart from each other. As well as you know when to move forward, how the whole thing goes. I think the entire process shouldn’t take but a few minutes.”
Newman said they wanted to think out of the box as he considered how to best sanitize the voting areas.
“How do we do this a little bit better than the other counties in Indiana and how do we entice the voters and give them the peace of mind that it’s safe, every one of these places is safe.”
Absentee voting has been approved for everyone during this Primary Election, visit the Indiana Secretary of States Website for more information.
