TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Terre Haute Police Department hosted its annual Fallen Officer Memorial at its headquarters on Monday.
The ceremony took place at the new memorial in front THPD headquarters.
The names of 14 Terre Haute officers and six Vigo County Sheriff’s deputies who made the ultimate sacrifice were read at the memorial.
“There are few jobs on this earth where you have people that will give their lives for people that they’ve never met,” Terre Haute Police Chief Shawn Keen said. “And this is one of them.”
Keen was one of whom who had the responsibility of reading the names of fallen officers during the ceremony. He said that he worked alongside Officer Brent Long, Officer Rob Pitts and Detective Greg Ferency. Keen said that it hurt to hear those familiar names.
“I’ve known all of the last three officers that we’ve lost so that’s a little harder for a lot of us,” Keen said.
This was the first ceremony that took place at the new fallen officer memorial. The memorial will display fallen officers and firefighters in the county. Keen stated that this new display will better honor their sacrifice.
Keen also mentioned that they plan to add a statue of Detective Greg Ferency.
