ROBINSON, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — Most of the Robinson, Ill. town square was evacuated Monday morning after a suspicious package was found on the Crawford County Courthouse lawn, according to Sheriff William Rutan.
A custodian found the package around 7:20 a.m. Monday, Rutan said. The package is described as a shoebox with another package attached to it.
An x-ray performed Monday afternoon showed nothing inside the box; however, a bomb squad confirmed. Authorities believe the package was left on the lawn intentionally.
“The design of the box itself doesn’t look like just an empty box. There’s some glue, there’s two boxes involved. It just seems like it was intentional to disrupt the court system,” Ratun said.
He said that “out of an abundance of caution” a four-block radius was blocked off for several hours. The sheriff’s department is coordinating with the Robinson Police Department and Illinois State Police to investigate the incident.
“If there’s any tips, leads or anything please call the Crawford County Sheriff’s office. Just report anything you can. It’s always important if you see something say something. If there’s something suspicious don’t hesitate to call,” Ratun said.
