TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A week filled with rain caused cancellations and postponements of big events Friday at the Vigo County Fair.
Fairground officials said they hoped for a big fair this year, as the COVID-19 pandemic took away most of the fair last year.
“There’s a lot that goes into planning events and planning different things around the fairgrounds,” Fairgrounds Manager Jenny Hamilton said. “Unfortunately, we rely on mother nature a lot, but it’s a headache and we can’t control what happens.”
Many big events such as the horse pull and The Kenny Wallace Driving Experience were cancelled Friday because they were to be held on the dirt track on the fairgrounds. Officials made this decision due to safety concerns.
However, Hamilton said that other attractions fared well.
“Our vendors have been happy and the carnival has been super busy,” Hamilton added. “It’s just the events in the grandstands that have not been in our favor this year.”
Hamilton said there is a possibility some events could be rescheduled. However, 4-H and the carnival will not be around past July 17.
Events that are rescheduled will be updated on the Vigo County Fairgrounds Facebook page, Hamilton said.
