PARIS, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — From a new hotel to increased manufacturing and new jobs, Paris, Illinois is bringing in new revenue and a new look to their city.

Mayor Craig Smith says over the years, creating a new senior living center and developing low-income housing has been some of his top goals with the main focus of showing the true light of the city.

“When people come and they call and they say we want to look at Paris and this is what we’re looking for. We’re looking for education,” Mayor Smith said. “We’re looking for housing and we’re looking for medical care. We can honestly look them in the eye and tell them we can match up with any city.”

One particular business that is doing very well is the new Hampton Inn opened by Horve Builders and Hospitality. Business has gone so well for the new hotel, Horve Builders and Hospitality is renovating the hotel to create 24 new rooms.

“There was a little bit of a ramp up this year and we’ve been pretty well full since a month in,” Jake Horve, VP of Development of Horve Builders and Hospitality. “So, we’ve done over 60 hotels and this was a first as far as doing an addition this quickly to opening.”

Hotel staff say one reason the hotel is doing so well is because they are seeing leisure business doing better than expected.

“We’ve created over 20 jobs down here. We’ll be hiring more as the hotel expands. Obviously the tax from the hotel, motel tax,” Horve said. “People are going to stay here and go to local businesses and restaurants and things of that nature. People are staying here, they’re going to shop here.”

Mayor Smith says the city has been fortunate over the last 18 to 20 years to see many businesses doing better including the manufacturing industry.

“I believe that in one point and time, we were creating per capita more manufacturing jobs in Paris, Illinois than any city in the state of Illinois,” Mayor Smith said.

Mayor Smith also adds that many manufacturing companies in Paris are hiring. Construction to the Hampton Inn will begin August 30th and will last six to seven months.
