PRAIRIETON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Prairieton United Methodist Church held a memorial service to honor fallen WWII veterans from the area on Sunday.

A plaque listing the names of the seven fallen WWII veterans is displayed in the church. George Smith, Bruce Mays, Bruce Figg, Ray Scarbrough, Robert Scarbrough, Joe Wade and Beryl Tarwarter are the seven names honored on the plaque.

During the memorial, family members or community members read short scripts about the names of the fallen to honor them. Binders and notebooks filled with information about the men were also on display.

Cindy Morgan is the organizer of the event and said plenty of research was put in to properly honor the seven Prairieton men.

“We started doing some research on those men and found their stories,” Morgan said. “We contacted some of their families and it just worked into a memorial service.”

Abby Desboro participated in the memorial and shared letters that were exchanged between her grandfather and his bestfriend. She said that it’s important for us to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day.

“It’s important to pay homage to those people and make sure that we don’t forget,” Desboro explained. “Remembering the people who gave the ultimate sacrifice for us.”
