SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A brother and sister were killed Thursday afternoon following a car vs. semi crash near Carlisle, according to Indiana State Police Sgt. Matt Ames.
Authorities identified the pair as Shelby Horton, 18, and Connor Rodriguez, 16, both of Carlisle.
“An off-duty lieutenant on the Indiana State Police, a nurse, they started administering first aid,” Ames said. “Unfortunately, one individual succumbed to the injuries at the scene. The other (person) in the vehicle was transported to Regional Hospital and has since succumbed to the injuries that they received from the accident.”
According to Ames, the crash occurred when Horton was driving a car eastbound on State Road 58, and disregarded the stop sign.
The car proceeded into the northbound lanes of US 41 and into the direct path of a semi tractor-trailer driven by Timothy Sarver, 38, of Terre Haute. Sarver applied his brakes and “attempted an evasive maneuver”; however, he was unable to avoid the collision, Ames said.
The collision sent both the semi and car off the roadway, where they both came to a final stop.
Sarver was uninjured.
Ames said police do not suspect drugs or alcohol to be a factor in the crash.
