‘Inappropriate racial comments’ under investigation at Vigo County Jail, sheriff says

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Alleged inappropriate racial comments made by Vigo County correctional officers are under investigation, Sheriff John Plasse confirmed Tuesday.

Plasse received the complaint Monday; however, he noted the incident occurred more than a month ago.

In the complaint, a female correctional officer said she was having a conversation with other officers during which they made the inappropriate comments.

Plasse said investigators are currently looking for evidence to support the complaint. If found to be true, those involved could face disciplinary action anywhere from a reprimand up to termination of employment.

Plasse called the alleged incident “very concerning” and “disheartening,” especially so soon after a lieutenant with the sheriff’s office retired after making inflammatory social media posts.

“We’re looking for changes we can make,” he said.

One such change is to the department policy itself. Plasse began looking at policy changes after it was discovered the lieutenant’s social media comments did not violate anything currently in the books.

Plasse said the new policy is under review by an attorney and could be implemented as soon as this week. The new policy will also extend to jail staff.
