WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Investigators have determined arson was the cause of a local motel fire.

Crews responded to the fire just after 10 p.m. Wednesday at the Stone Lodge Motel at 5665 Illiana Road near West Terre Haute.

According to Vigo County Sheriff, John Plasse, the owner of the motel called the fire department after the person renting the room came into the office, said the room was on fire, and left. That person was later identified as Michael Sharpe, 20, of West Terre Haute.

Upon arrival, firefighters quickly extinguished the flame, which was contained to the one room. Most of the damage was inflicted on a couch. Officials also discovered that the smoke detectors had been ripped off the walls and thrown in the toilet.

Sharpe was later found at his mother’s home where he admitted to setting the fire for fun. He has been charged with arson.
