TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Cody Scherb, the 17-year-old Terre Haute resident recently arrested in connection with the July 23 shooting of a 15-year-old Terre Haute girl, entered a preliminary plea of not guilty in court Thursday and now has 20 days to hire a lawyer before the plea becomes formal.
Scherb is facing charges of theft of a firearm and dangerous possession of a firearm, which are both felonies, for his connection with the shooting. On Thursday, he appeared in court where his bond was set to remain at $25,000 according to the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office.
The 17-year-old’s next court date is set for Aug. 25, where his not guilty plea will be formalized. Scherb has until that day to hire private counsel or a public defender will be appointed to him.
In the meantime, Scherb will stay at the Vigo County Juvenile Detention Center due to overcrowding at the jail. He is being charged as an adult in Vigo County Superior Court 6. If convicted, judges said he could spend up to eight years in prison.
