Terre Haute North recognized one of its own during today’s track meet.
The school will rename the North track after William “Bill” M. Welch.
Welch is a legend who ran his way into the hearts of many. He spent 3 decades coaching in Vigo County schools.
Some of the feats at North while its track and field coach include 9 sectional championships, 4 regional champs.. and a 1972 cross country state championship, the first ever in Terre Haute.
Welch is 93 years old, having the track named after him is an honor and a delight, but he feels he’s not worthy.
“They ought to be able to call it some kind of an athlete’s track. They’re the ones that run on it. A coach just teaches and encourages. But the athlete has to do all the running and jumping and throwing,” Welch said of the honor.
