Sycamores Cruise to Win at Fort Wayne

Sports

Indiana State racked up 11 hits as Kylie Stober and Della Gher combined to shut down the Mastodons in an 8-2 midweek win at Fort Wayne on Wednesday.

The Sycamores (18-19) jumped out to a 3-0 lead right out of the gate and never looked back, yielding just one earned run and five hits all game to Fort Wayne (8-29). Three different Sycamores had multi-hit games – Rylee Holland (3-3, RBI), Mary Turitto (2-3, 2B, RBI) and Gabi Carter (2-4) – with Turitto and Shaye Barton (1-2) both smacking doubles.

Stober, meanwhile, pitched five complete while only yielding one run and four hits while also punching out a season-high four batters. Stober has gone at least 5.0 innings in six of her last seven starts and seven of her last nine. Gher, who leads the Valley in saves, came in to pitch the final two innings, allowing one unearned and just one hit while tossing just nine pitches to eight batters.

Turitto led off the action for Indiana State in the first, picking right back up where she left off as the hero of ISU’s walk-off win vs. Missouri State on Sunday. The senior ripped a double to right field, scoring Holland to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman Becky Malchow then took advantage of two Fort Wayne defensive miscues, first reaching on an error to score Brooke Riemenschneider. Then, on an attempted steal of second base she got caught in the rundown long enough for Turitto to cross for the 3-0 ISU lead.

Fort Wayne brought one across in the bottom of the first, but the Sycamore pitching staff then threw 6.0 scoreless until the Mastodons scored one unearned in the seventh off Gher.

In the second, Rylee Holland ripped an RBI single down the left field line to score Kassie Brown (1-2, RBI, BB) to make the game 4-1, and ISU took a 5-1 lead on a single off the bat of Gabi Carter in the fourth.

ISU scored three on three hits in the sixth to take an 8-1 lead, started off by a long double to the left field wall by Shaye Barton. Brown brought her in on an RBI single down the left field line, and Leslie Sims (1-3, BB, SB) followed suit with an identical shot to left to make it first and third. Sims proceeded to steal second, allowing Brown to score on a throwing error by the catcher. Erika Crissman capped the Sycamore scoring with an RBI groundout for ISU’s eighth run.

The Sycamores will now head straight out to Wichita State for one last conference matchup on Friday and Saturday before the Shockers leave the Missouri Valley at the end of the season.
