SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Sullivan girls tennis team defeated Owen Valley 5-0 on senior night for the school’s 18th win of the season. That sets a new school record for the Lady Arrows. The old record was 16 victories. Senior Lexie Baker says team depth has been one reason for their success. “I think that this year we have a really big team and we all get along really well and I think that definitely helps when we’re always laughing on the court off the court during practice during matches and us just having fun together is I think really is a big secret to our success,” she said.
Added senior Courtney Lueking: “I think the secret to our success has been putting in lots of hours in the off season and during the summers and everyone has just been working really hard to be the best we can be this year,” she said.
For senior Annie Smith there is an appreciation for just being back on the court. “Especially with COVID and everything we did not know what the other teams are going to look like we didn’t really know what our team was going to look like so this is just really nice outcome for our senior year,” Smith said.
Another senior Peyton Sisil says this team has surpassed her expectations. “I never expected us to be this dominant this year I mean we’ve all put the work in the summers but we really have come out worked hard and it’s all paid off,” she said.
6th year head coach Wes Kirk also acknowledged other members of the team who have been instrumental in the undefeated start. “We’ve also been blessed with several young players Hanna Burkhart, Paige Chickadaunce and Sarah Francis kind of round out our varsity two sophomores and a freshman and when you’ve added the talent of those three with these seniors it’s been a really deep team,” he said.
