SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College president Dottie L. King announced Tuesday that SMWC will join five other colleges and universities in the Midwest and Upper South to field a sprint football team starting in fall 2022.
The team will the college’s sixteenth intercollegiate scholarship team. The six private colleges and universities are the charter members of the newly formed, independent athletic conference the Midwest Sprint Football League (MSFL).
The other charter members of the MSFL are Bellarmine University in Kentucky, Calumet College of St. Joseph in Indiana, Fontbonne University in Missouri, Midway University in Kentucky and Quincy University in Illinois.
“Each time we add a team it’s exciting to me because I know in my mind’s eye young people will have new opportunities to come to college and then I think about the enhanced experience for the students we already have so very exciting,” King said. “I have to tell you football is not the one I thought I would bring, but when this opportunity fell in my lap it was too good to pass by.”
Interim athletic director Ron Prettyman said he is happy to add another new sport.
“Sprint Football is a whole unique thing,” Prettyman said. “We are going to have great athletes being able to play this sport.”
The league will begin competition in the fall of 2022. A search is already underway for a new head football coach.
