JASONVILLE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – There are only four teams left in the class A baseball state tournament: Shakamak, Borden, Washington Township and Cowan. One of them will win it all in about 10 days. The Skakamak Lakers won the title in 2014. The Lakers will play Borden on Saturday in the semi state round.
A berth in the championship game is on the line. The Lakers are powered by seven seniors including Peyton Yeryar and Buddy Stone. There’s definitely a strong baseball tradition at Shakamak and this team makes the whole town proud.
Coach Jeremy Yeryar is in his first year as manager and getting a team to the final four is a great accomplishment in 2021. “We play a lot of big schools along with our conference and our conference is really strong getting stronger every year as well too so just the competition we play that we play that just makes everybody better because everybody always says you’re only as good as you’re competition,” he said.
Added senior Buddy Stone: “Just teamwork we have an all around good team we’ve got bats that go all the way through the lineup everybody can hit the ball pretty well I feel like that kind of puts us above where other people just have four or five guys i feel like we have nine real good guys who can hit,” Stone said.
For senior pitcher Peyton Yeryar there’s a lot of confidence going forward. “There’s not a team I don’t think that can beat us if we keep playing to our full potential and playing as a team you know just keep the bats rolling keep the pitching going we’ll be alright,” he said. They play Borden on Saturday at Mooresville for a 1 pm slated first pitch.
