BRAZIL, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – In a normal season head coach Michael Byrum and the Northview Knights would have played a few games by now, but this year is anything but normal.
“You know I’m just glad to be back in the gym I mean this is our second day after being shut down for 20 – 21 days so I mean it’s a great feeing being back with the boys in the gym,” he said.
The shutdown was due to Clay County being in the red but now it’s full steam ahead for a team that returns four of their top 7 players including Caleb Swearingen. He led them in scoring last season with 16 points per game. He says the players took the initiative to stay ready.
“We all had like a group chat where we were keeping each other accountable putting in work getting like two or three guys together that way we wouldn’t have like the whole group of guys but I mean getting our individual work and staying in shape,” Swearingen said.
Another key returner is Brevin Cooper who averaged 10 points per game and led the Knights in rebounds and assists. He says they will help lead the team with experience. “We’re here just to lead each other and go get some wins this year. Our goal’s this year we want to win Regionals,” he said.
They’re looking to be the first Northview team to accomplish that. Last year’s team was 15-10 and has juniors Ethan DeHart and Jacob Fowler to help them go deep in the postseason. However looking at the bigger picture Coach Byrum knows how lucky they are just to be able to play at this point in the calendar.
“We’re very grateful I mean we were going into our third practice third day of the season and we got everything shut down so that really puts things in perspective how quickly things can go in the opposite direction so I mean we’re enjoying ourselves we’re enjoying our opportunities to spend the days and the time together and then we’re really excited also hopefully have the opportunity to play games,” he said.
They are scheduled to open the season at home against West Vigo on December 11th.
