EUGENE, Ore. (WTWO/WAWV) – Linton, Ind., native Micaela Hazelwood is still in play for one of three spots on the U.S. Olympic Team following her performance Saturday night at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Hazelwood secured a personal best throw of 62.54 meters in her second attempt of the competition. She ended the night finishing in second place behind Valarie Allman, who finished with a throw of 69.92 meters.
Hazelwood now has until June 29 to match the Olympic Standard of 63.50 meters. If she is not able to do so, Whitney Ashley will secure the remaining spot on the discus team.
Rachel Dincoff is the other qualifier who finished third in the competition, but she has already thrown the Olympic Standard. So, Allman and Dincoff have qualified for Tokyo. Ultimately it will be either Hazelwood or Ashley who gets the final spot.
