WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — West Vigo sweeps the McMillan Awards for best male and female athlete in Vigo County.

Carter Murphy wins the 2023 McMillan Award for Male Athlete.

Katelyn Fennell wins the 2023 McMillan Award for Female Athlete.

“With the prestigious names that’s gotten this award, it makes you want to live up to the meaning of this award and I just hope I can produce and make people proud,” says Murphy.

Katelyn says, “I was very surprised. I’m very honored and I think it’s really cool that Carter won too because West Vigo we don’t normally win all of the awards.”

“I wouldn’t be here without my baseball team,” says Murphy.

“Those are my guys. They are my family. My closest brothers. It’s awesome and my family they do so much for me. I wouldn’t be here without them either. It’s a huge honor to have them in my corner.”

Katelyn says, “It’s very rewarding. We don’t get this because we just play – we put a lot of hard work in here so it’s a big award for us.”

It’s the first time since 1993 that West Vigo wins both McMillan Awards.
