CLINTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Entering head coach Greg Barrett’s 6th year the South Vermillion Wildcats are a mix of veterans and youth. One thing Wildcats fans can count on is leadership from key players.

“I’m really excited about the leadership we have from our senior group and we’ve got a good sophomore class with that junior mix in there I like what we have going at this point,” he said.

One of the seniors he’s referring to is defensive end Gus Shryock. It may benefit offensive coordinators to know where he is on the line. And playing along side him is his brother Alex Shryock. They both enjoy playing on a defensive unit that is one of the team’s strengths.

“It’s pretty awesome he plays outside linebacker on my side and we’ve just got this connection like brothers we’re best friends take him everywhere you can’t beat that but we really work hard and it’s phenomenal to see him grow in the weight room I just want him to be better than me really,” Gus said.

Added his brother Alex: “It’s really great he kind of brought me in really early in my football career and it’s really helped me get that extra step in to playing the game and understanding the atmosphere and it’s just been a great time and I’m going to miss him very much after this year,” he said.

So the Shryock brothers will star on the defensive side of the ball and on offense Dom Garzolini takes over from his older brother Anthony who’s now at Indiana State. But coach Barrett has confidence that his offense will continue to produce in the fall and has high hopes for SV.

“Win a conference a sectional like everybody wants to you know so we’ve done a couple of those things but the next is to win a sectional championship you know so once you get to that point you keep climbing I’m extremely happy where we’re at these guys have been great in the community you know you’re developing men of character and that’s what it’s all about you know because fortunately you can win more than just on the field and through our program that’s what we try to stress,” Barrett said.
