TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Indiana State Sycamores will open the season on September 1st at home against North Alabama. Two defensive players for fans to watch this season are #2 Geoffrey Brown and defensive back #7 Johnathan Edwards.

Geoffrey is 6’1 and 230 pounds entering his sophomore season. He’ll be flying around making plays this fall. And on the back end is Edwards who’s 6’1 and 200 pounds. Coach Mallory said he has a chance to be as good as there’s been at the school.

Here’s the coach on his linebacker assuming a new leadership role. “Well I think he’s (Brown) is going to be huge you know it always starts in the middle of your defense you’re only as good as where you start right down the middle of your defense you know middle linebacker when we’ve been really good on defense it’s because we had Katrell Moss you know we had Jonas Griffith and I really think Geoffrey Brown has an opportunity to be like that,” Mallory said.

Added Brown on his new role: “It’s a role that i have to step into this year last year being a freshman I didn’t really have to that’s wasn’t really a big role for me but this year he’s talked to me about it and I’ve been talked to by other dudes on the team like Ethan Hooper and Kris Reid about just stepping up and a guy that people look forward to and to have a big season and a guy that people look up to,” he said.

As fort Edwards he enjoys playing alongside Brown. “I love Geoffrey it’s like it feels like playground ball man I know it’s college D1 ball but it feel like playground we out there having fun we set each others standards high for each other like i said we was not roommates but we lived in the same floor our freshman year we’ve been talking about this since day one and know it’s coming to fruition we’re starting to become leaders on this team trying to lead our team to success this year,” Edwards said.

As for the quarterback situation. Both Dane Andrews from West Vigo and South Vermillion alum Anthony Garzolini took snaps on Saturday. They’re competing with Gavin Screws, Cade Chambers and Evan Olaes. Coach Mallory calling that competition wide open.
