TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – On Friday the Indiana State Sycamores opened the first of 15 practices at Memorial Stadium. While optimism abounds for the upcoming season, the Sycamores are getting little respect in Missouri Valley pre season polls. ISU was picked to finish 10th in the 11 team league.
Head coach Curt Mallory says it’s not something the team is focused on right now. “Yep we’ll see we’ll see how that goes ok we don’t worry about that we worry about how we finish. We’ve got more things to worry about and that’s ourselves getting better day by day. Yeah I didn’t expect anyone to pick us to win it you know so but I don’t give that any thought,” Mallory said.
Added receiver Dante Hendrix: “There’s pre season polls out there that we saw that many people don’t believe in us but that’s ok we don’t need them to believe in us we just need to believe in each other I think we’re going to surprise some people,” Hendrix said.
Defensive lineman Inoke Moala thinks the projection could be do to the fact that Indiana State did not play last season. “We didn’t play in the spring and we all understand that we’re not worried about you know being picked 10th or whatever we’re just grateful we’re able to be out here and train be able to look forward to the season so that’s what we’re looking forward to,” Moala said.
Ultimately offensive lineman Isaiah Edwards is focused on the team’s opener against Eastern Illinois on Saturday August 28th. “Definitely ready for August 28th against EIU but you know we’ve got a lot of time between now and then so you know take it one day at a time prepare ourselves as best we can hope to come out with a victory on August 28th,” Edwards said. The opener with Eastern Illinois is one of five home games for the Sycamores in 2021.
