TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Indiana State Sycamores held a spirited scrimmage on Saturday morning at Memorial Stadium. Gavin Screws (Jacksonville, Fla) and Cade Chambers (Maryville, Tenn) are competing for the starting quarterback position.

On defense the Sycamores lost many starters including Inoke Moala and Mekhi Ware. Stepping in to help lead the defense will be Geoffrey Brown, a linebacker from Fishers, Ind. Brown says he looks forward to his new role. “On the defense we lost a lot of leaders last year like Inoke, Mekhi and Kelvin Broome people like that it’s just trying to take over that leadership role for this group of young guys like me myself I have to step into that role this year. They’re going to see a defense that flies around this year all 11 hats to the ball,” Brown said.

Head coach Curt Mallory says he’s energized being around this year’s group. “Oh this has been probably the most fun I’ve had in spring you know and they bring energy they come out with a purpose every day and this team I’ve said it all along I don’t know if I’ve been this excited to coach a football team in all my career you know it’s the leadership and the effort and the attitude they bring every day. Well we’ve got a good mixture of young old inexperienced experienced and you see the older guys helping the younger guys very un-selfish group,” Mallory said.

As for the running backs, North Central alum Dawson Basinger says he feels his game has improved heading into his redshirt sophomore season. “It’s going pretty well I’m improving in my game I’m just getting better every day and I’m having a great time out here. It’s just a family environment everybody loves each other here and we’re all brothers so that’s what I like most about it,” Basinger said.

Following spring camp the Sycamores will have training camp in July. They will open the 2022 season at home against North Alabama on September 1st. Time has yet to be determined for that Thursday night game.
