TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Legendary Indiana State gymnast Kurt Thomas has died at the age of 64. Thomas’ family said he died Friday, after suffering a stroke on May 24 caused by a tear of the basilar artery in the brain stem.
Thomas was a world champion and the first American in 46 years to win a medal in the International Gymnastics competition. He also won five individual NCAA titles and led Indiana State to the 1977 NCAA men’s championship.
Indiana State had been making plans to honor him and the rest of the 1977 national champions this winter inside the newly renovated Hulman Center.
Thomas was inducted into the ISU athletics Hall of Fame in 1999 and the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2003.
He is survived by his wife Beckie and their children Kassidy, Hunter and Kurt.
