Elizabeth Evans finishes fifth in high jump

EUGENE, Ore. (WTWO/WAWV) — Bicknell, Ind., native Elizabeth Evans finished fifth in the high jump Sunday at the U.S. Olympic Trials, clearing a career-best six feet two and three fourths inches.

Evans did not make the Olympic team with this jump, however her jump surpassed her qualifying mark by exactly two inches in a career-best effort. Evans also improved to fifth place at the Olympic Trials after finishing 18th in the Trials in 2016.

In a later attempt Evans was injured when she appeared to land on the bar with a miss. She did not finish the competition. Vashti Cunningham, the daughter of former NFL player Randall Cunningham, won the high jump with a leap of more than six and a half feet.
