MONTGOMERY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Barr-Reeve Vikings had a good shot to win the state championship last Spring, but sadly their season was cut short due to the pandemic. Now they are back with a new addition to make another run at the title.
Brycen Graber is one of several impact players for the Vikings. The senior led the state in assists with 8.3 per game and feels this team can leave a legacy in a town that loves their basketball. “Definitely the most excited I’ve been out of my four years with last year getting taken away this year’s team is very fun very fun. We believe we would have won state. We lost to Loogootee earlier we beat Loogootee we were number one and we liked where we were,” he said.
In addition to Brycen Hagen Knepp also returns. He says the Vikings are poised to pick up where they left off in the Spring. “Getting the season cut short it was pretty heartbroken I was heartbroken and we really felt like we could have went all the way and won it but it got taken away so we’re back here this year,” he said.
And if you haven’t heard about Curt Hopf, well you soon will. The 6’9 forward joins the Vikings from Forest Park. Even though this will be his first year, there is a lot of familiarity with his teammates and head coach Josh Thompson. “Just the type of people that are here. I knew Brycen and Devin from some AAU from a few years back and I just knew the type of characters they were and as I got to know more and more people here it’s just very appealing and it’s somewhere I wanted to be. I love Josh he’s a great coach he’s a great guy all around he’s done nothing but good things for me,” Hopf said.
Orchestrating all this talent is the task of Thompson who knows this team has championship chemistry. “Three great guys to build around and those guys are excellent teammates and they make everybody around them better and those guys are probably to a detriment a little bit too unselfish at times and they do a great job of getting other guys involved,” he said.
The Vikings home opener is scheduled for Tuesday December 8th against Bloomington South. The game will be the debut of a sparkling new gym at Barr-Reeve High School.
