A Hannahs house divided

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Like every freshman baseball player, Kaleb Hannahs was robbed of his senior season a year ago due to the pandemic.

The former West Vigo Viking has made his fair share of big plays. Now he’s learning how to do it on the Missouri Valley stage.

“So far this season has definitely been a struggle. The first 3ish weeks, definitely gone through an adjustment from high school baseball to college baseball, but we are getting there day by day, ” he said.

Mitch Hannahs says,”I think for all of the freshman getting to play around college baseball, it’s a tough task. You are playing against guys that are 23-24 years old that are still in college and know how to play at this level and you are taking some knocks and learning on the job and that’s part of it. I really don’t feel like there’s any pressure on those guys, if you are getting on the field and getting to play you are getting valuable experience that’s going to help your club later this year and years down the road.”

Kaleb signed with Valpo and now this weekend has the tough task of squaring off with the Sycamores.

“This weekend is definitely going to be weird playing against my dad. Not sure how it will be at all — it will defintely be interesting.”

Mitch says, “I’ve got the easy job. He’s got to have the maturity as a young player to block it all out and just play. I think he and I are both kind of in the same mindset that we wish it would be under the radar and not be a source of any conversation, but it is what it is and we will try to downplay it the best we can and make this about Valpo and Indiana State.”

Six years ago, Derek Hannahs was swinging away at Bob Warn Field so what does big brother think about this weekend?

Derek Hannahs says,”It’s definitely going to be an interesting weekend for our family. I look forward to sitting back and watching some baseball. As a Sycamore alum and where we sit in the current NCAA Tournament picture I will be pulling for the Sycamores however I do hope Kaleb gets a few base hits as long as there’s nobody on base.”

Mom, Amy Hannahs says, “So this upcoming weekend, my sweatshirt that Derek got for myself and his sister, kind of sums up the complicated weekend that’s ahead of us, but I know my job as a mom sitting in the bleachers is going to be a whole lot easier than his dad the coach or Kaleb the player.”

Mitch says, “I think the toughest job during the game is the guy who’s got to play right? I think the toughest job after the game is the people that live with me if we lose. That’s kind of the way it goes in this stuff.”

Sister, Kylee Hannahs says, “I’m looking forward to watching my brother and dad play this weekend. I will be rooting for the Sycamores. and that may or may not have something to do with how grouchy Coach Hannahs gets after they lose.”

Mitch says,”She’s probably right. She usually goes to a hotel when we lose. She doesn’t stay at home.”

Kaleb says, “This weekend is going to be special for me since I’m playing against my dad it’s pretty much going to be like a family reunion. The whole family is going to be at the ballpark, extended family and everything so that will be pretty cool.”
