For many of us, it’s hard to plan for the Christmas season when we haven’t hit Thanksgiving yet. But one organization has to think ahead to spread the yuletide spirit to all in the Wabash Valley.
“He said, it’s this box of dishes, he said, we can’t all eat together because we don’t have enough dishes in the house,” Jennifer Buell said.
Development Director with Catholic Charities, Jennifer Buell has seen and heard it all when it comes to the needs of those less fortunate.
With the Catholic Charities annual Christmas Store the community is able to receive necessities at no cost.
“These are not excessive items, as you look around the Christmas Store, these are very basic needs things,” she said.
The Christmas Store is asking for your help. New toys for children 12 and under, gifts for teens, new clothes especially for boys and men and undergarments for all are on the list for needed donations.
The Christmas Store looks pretty well stocked for the holiday season, but you’d be surprised with the organization’s outreach, a lot of these items will be gone in the first couple of days.
Nearly 1,000 families from around the valley receive a voucher for the Christmas Store, that’s more than 4,000 people the store is able to reach.
Pam Grimes is an unconditional Christmas Store giver and knows just how quickly these items go.
“Whenever I find a bargain a sale, whatever. I will spend $20 or $30 here and there and do that several times a year, so I have several things to take in and donate,” Grimes said.
Pam also works as a volunteer during the Christmas Store’s hours, she says that’s what fueled her knowledge of the need in our community.
“I would like somebody to be doing that for me and my family if that was a need, so if i’m blessed, i’m blessed enough to help in some way, so that’s what I try to do.”
You can drop off your donation items at the Christmas Store at 1440 Locust Street, the Bethany House at 1402 Locust Street or Catholic Charities at 1801 Poplar Street.
Shopper assistant volunteers are also needed at the store during the weeks of November 28th and December 5th.
