VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Election Day is November 5, and so far 6,847 early votes have been cast.
3,753 votes are from the city of Terre Haute and 3,094 votes are from Vigo County.
Poll workers said they have seen an increase in county votes due to the two referendums on the ballot, the casino and the Vigo County School Corporation operational tax.
Resident Charles long hasn’t voted in 15 years.
He said the casino referendum persuaded him to break his 15 year streak, “We do a lot of gambling and I just thought it’d be nice if we do get it put in here in Terre Haute.”
As far as the VCSC tax referendum, resident Laura McGlone said the corporation should focus on their budget cuts before asking for money.
“If you’re already planning cuts,” she explained. “Those cuts need to take place before you start taxing me.”
The most talked about referendum by far is the casino.
“I was thinking about no on the casino, up until I realized the money is going to go for the school corporation and it’s going to better Terre Haute,” said resident Steve Hoffman.
And it’s stirred up quite a controversy between voters.
The casino is biblically wrong. And I think they can bring in better finances into the county through other means,” said McGlone. “Not through a casino.”
“I think it’ll be great,” said Long. “It will create a lot of jobs and Terre Haute needs jobs.”
In addition to the 6,847 early votes 1,607 mail votes have also been cast.
If you plan to vote at the Vigo County Government Center or the Honey creek Mall you have until Monday November 4 at noon to cast your vote.
The seven other voting centers will close Saturday November 2 at 6 pm.
“Whether you’re democrat or republican or independent,” said Hoffman. “Come out and vote, let your word be heard.”
