WWII History Landing In Terre Haute

News

A historic World War II plane will be featured in the air show this weekend but it didn’t have to travel very far to get there, in fact, in was already in the lot.

A local Terre Haute family had no idea how impactful their war bird would be on the people who sat in the back seat.

The Terre Haute family that owns the plane aims to use it to help teach people about its history as well as let the veterans who made the history, relive their glory days.

Terre Haute’s Kathy and JP Mellor own The Spanish Lady, a historic air craft that was essential to U.S. military in WWII.

“It is a lot of fun. We really enjoy sharing this plane with people and learning their affiliation with it.,” says Kathy Mellor, owner of The Spanish Lady.

The plane has been restored to its original likeness, looking almost identical to when it was used by the U.S. military.

This very plane was used to train military personnel in WWII, and it  was even used to train military as recently as in the early 80’s.

JP is a Navy veteran, but always dreamed of flying planes. Now the family offers rides to people like Judy Brett who’s husband is a WWII veteran and flew a plane very similar to the T-6 during his service.

“I miss him so much. And this was a way of being close to him,” says Brett. Her husband, Bill, passed away July first.

She explains how she felt being able to see what he used to tell her in his stories, “very emotional. I was thinking about him a lot. It was very emotional.”

“This is what happens with everybody that has a connection to this plane. They just get so emotional and tearful. And just, it brings the best memories to them,” says Mellor.

The Mellor’s have flown in air shows before but this will their first time participating in the Terre Haute Air Show and their goal is to do more than entertain the masses, “we just want to expose more people to the history.”

The Mellor’s are the third civilians to own The Spanish Lady since the plane returned to the U.S. from Spain in the 1980’s.

I also had the opportunity to take a ride in The Spanish Lady today. You can click here to see the web exclusive.

The Spanish Lady will not only be flying in the Terre Haute Air Show, but they will also be offering rides to spectators.

If you can’t get a slot this weekend, the Mellor’s offer year round rides on their WWII air craft, and they will even give you the opportunity to steer the plane while in flight.
