It’s a necessity for law enforcement, but the crew in blue in West Terre Haute are looking for a more convenient way to receive new bullet proof vests.
The ones they have now will expire in January 2018. The police department is asking for donations from the community to pay for half of the vests. There are 24 officers in the city and in total the vests will cost $23 thousand.
“We don’t have as large of a tax base as the county or Terre Haute city would so our tax funding is significantly less than those so when financial stuff like this comes up, it puts a strain on the financial budget, by doing the fundraiser it allows the clerk/treasurer, to allocate money toward other projects,” Sgt. Ian Redman said.
The police department anticipates that half of the money they need will come from a bureau of justice assistance grant. So far, they’ve receive nearly $2 thousand in donations.
