TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Wabash Valley United Way kicks off their Power of the Purse event as they raise money for early education.
This year’s event will be a virtual silent auction due to COVID-19 with bidding open now and ending on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
Packages available for bidding include purses, gift cards and an expresso machine. All of the money raised will benefit “Success by 6”. Success by 6 is a program that focuses on early childhood education.
The United Way is raising money to help purchase “K-packs”. K-packs include lessons plans as well as other items that help kids prepare for school.
“All kinds of little activities that the parents can work with a kindergarten on,” stated Abby Desboro. “Little things that can get them more prepared for school.”
United Way Wabash Valley is looking to help kids in each of their six counties including Vigo, Sullivan, Clay, Vermillion and Park in Indiana and Clarke county in Illinois.
“We want to be able to provide k-packs to kids who are currently in kindergarten as well,” explained Desboro. So we’re looking to raise $18,000 to provide k-packs to all kindergarteners in the Wabash Valley.”
