Wabash Valley Power Squadron promotes boat safety

With summer almost here, it’s thestart of the boating season! It’s fun to hit the waves, and to spend some time at a dock. But be careful.

Nearly 700 people die every year due to boating related accidents.

The Wabash Valley Power Squadron wants to make sure that everyone does what they can to stay safe on the water.

Friday morning the group promoted their message at Fairbanks Park for Boating Safety Week.

Officials stressed a couple of basic safety rules including always wearing a life jacket when you’re on a boat, and don’t drive a boat while drinking alcohol.

Sometimes people go out and they drink a little bit. You’re having a good time out on the water. And sometimes you get a little lazy about some of the things that you do. Just try to be conscious of that. And stay aware that water can be dangerous.”

– Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett

Some other tips include taking a boating safety course and getting a vessel safety check.
