VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Vincennes police officer and his wife are facing several charges stemming from a child abuse claim.

Robert “Ben” Hammond and Kristi Hammond both of Wheatland, Ind. were arrested Friday and charged with neglect of a dependent, criminal confinement and battery of a victim under the age of 14 following a lengthy investigation that began in July.

According to court documents, the couple used a wooden spoon and metal spatula to strike Kristi’s child. They are also accused of locking the child outside and using duct tape as a restraint on multiple occasions.

The couple was transported to the Knox County Jail pending posting of $10,000 bond.

The City of Vincennes released a statement that Ben Hammond had been suspended without pay from the Vincennes Police Department.

A merit board hearing has been scheduled for Thursday to discuss the matter.
