Vigo County has a new tool to collect back taxes. It’s called the Tax Refund Exchange and Compliance System.
It means Vigo County can contact the Indiana Department of Revenue to intercept state income tax refunds for property owners who owe local back taxes.
The county must notify the debtor of their intention to do so, giving that person a chance to pay those back taxes.
Vigo County Treasurer Nancy Allsup says the county sent in about 6,500 parcels, which are pieces of land on which back taxes are owed.
She says there are $8.5 million owed on those delinquent properties.
“Hopefully, they’ll come in and pay those, I’m hoping, and take some of those off the tax sale,” says Allsup.
Last year, three other Indiana counties, as well as the city of Indianapolis, took part in this program. Allsup says they saw a lot of success.
