VIGO Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Election Day 2020 is less than 100 days away and Vigo County election officials said they’re laying the groundwork for safe and convenient voting.

Wednesday, the Vigo County Election Board met to discuss preliminary plans for elections this fall.

The main topic of discussion was making voting centers safe and easy for people to cast ballots.

According to County Clerk Brad Newman, one goal the board has is to avoiding voting in school buildings for safety reasons. He said this is the case if students are physically back in class.

He added that the board wants to make sure voting is accessible to everyone, while also having polling places that allow for proper social distancing.

As part of the discussion, the board is laying out plans to locate additional voting centers in the county which would give people more time and space to vote early.

The election board has set a goal to have four 28-day voting locations instead of two.

However, they said if they can’t make it happen, they will work to add more 7-day locations if possible.
