New progress is being made to bring the current Vigo County Jail up to code and less stressful for correctional staff.
In Monday night’s county council meeting, a proposal was made to increase the number of staff in the current jail.
The proposal was made by a federal judge, to order the county to hire 24 new employees to keep the jail running.
In past public meetings regarding the jail, the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department told officials that the number of inmates overlaps the number of jail staff.
And on Monday night, county council officials voted in favor to approve the funding for 24 additional staffers.
“The council had previously made considerations for three additional staff. And when the court order came along, then that changed the position of it very quickly,” said Councilman Mike Morris.
Council officials Say the this issue is now in the hands of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, to try and begin the hiring process of the 24 additional jail staff members.
