Vigo Co. men participate in walk to raise awareness of sexual assault

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center in the U.S. one in three women will experience sexual violence during their life. This is a statistic that the group “Inside Out” on ISU’s campus is looking to prevent.

“On college campuses around the country, sexual assault is a huge issue. Men take a big part in that, men commit most of the sexual assaults,” said Nathan Koehler, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes organizer.

To help bring attention to this issue, Friday, men from around the community are putting themselves in the shoes of women with an event known as “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes”. This is an event where men are encouraged to wear high heels.

“Walk A Mile In Her Shoes is an international men’s march to raise awareness to end rape, gender violence, and sexual assault,” Koehler said.

Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse says his deputies are called out to investigate sexual assault cases every day.

“I would say it’s an every day occurrence and I’m sure more than once on many days,” Plasse said.

That’s why Plasse says he felt is was necessary for him to partake in this event.

“It’s pretty scary for me to wear those shoes but that makes me realize it’s pretty scary for people in those situations that are victims of violence. So anything we can do to bring awareness to that and reduce the amounts of violence in our community, I’m all for doing that,” Plasse said.
