TERRE HAUTE, Ind., (WTWO/WAWV)– The Vigo County Commissioners approved a request to transfer county property to local landowners.
The county transferred a vacant alley and a roadway that are no longer maintained by the county to two local property owners in Terre Haute.
Vigo Co. Commissioner Brendan Kearns said the land transfer must benefit both the landowner and the county.
“We’re looking at properties that we own. The county owns a lot of property and there’s some things that we probably don’t need anymore. So it’s an ongoing process. But if somebody does want to vacate something they can definitely come to the commissioner’s office and we can help move them forward,” Kearns said.
The process for a land transfer takes 4-5 weeks to complete and it must be approved by the county commissioners office.
According to Kearns, land owners do not have to pay the county to have a property vacated; however, they may have to pay fees to the Recorder’s office.
