TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — In a special ceremony Sunday afternoon, Vietnam veterans received a “Welcome Home” celebration in their honor.
Hospice of the Wabash Valley put on the recognition ceremony at the Sycamore Country Club. Guest speakers, door prizes, and hor d’oeurves made for a nice celebration.
Organizers say this is the “Welcome Home” veterans, particularly those who fought in the Vietnam War, didn’t always receive when they returned home.
“Veterans keep to themselves; they have a whole language among themselves that they can relate to, but a lot of the time not even their families know what’s going on with them. So it’s important, any chance that the community gets to get a little insight into what they’ve gone through and what they’re dealing with and the talents that they have. It’s really important to get the message out there,” said Vigo County Judge John Roach.
Memorabilia from the Veterans Memorial Museum in Terre Haute was on display at the event as well.
