Vermillion County authorities name suspect who prompted school lockdown

VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department have named a suspect in an incident which caused South Vermillion schools to go into a brief lockdown on Tuesday.

Marcus A. Vaughn, age 31 from St. Bernice faces charges of intimidation with a gun, battery on a person under 14 by a person 18 or older, possession of a handgun without a permit, possession of methamphetamine, and manufacturing methamphetamine.

According to a release by Vermillion County Sheriff Mike Phelps, around 2:30 authorities were called to a home in St. Bernice due to an altercation involving an adult and a child.

Authorities were alerted that Marcus Vaughn had a handgun and was threatening another adult and a child, before fleeing.

While deputies searched for Vaughn in the St. Bernice area, the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department asked for South Vermillion schools to go on a brief lockdown until the suspect was in custody.

“It was close to the time that the South Vermillion schools would be releasing students from the schools and then buses would be dropping them off in that area,” Sheriff Phelps said in a news release.

Phelps says within 10-15 minutes of the lockdown they were able to take Vaughn into custody.

During his arrest, a loaded handgun and several knives were discovered.

Sheriff Phelps says following a search warrant at Vaughn’s home, Cassie Vaughn, age 31 from St. Bernice was also arrested for neglect of a dependent.

Marcus Vaughn is being held at the Vermillion County Jail on $50,000 bond with 10% allowed.

Cassie Vaughn is being held on $10,000 bond.

The case is being referred to the ATF due to Vaughn possibly manufacturing homemade weapon silencers.

The child involved in the incident was sent to a local hospital with facial injuries.
