VIGO COUNTY, Ind. - An update timeline regarding construction on the new Vigo County Jail has been released through a court submission filed Tuesday. The timeline was presented to a federal judge as part of the lawsuit regarding current jail conditions.
The filing states Garmong Construction submitted a proposed timeline to Vigo County Commissioners back on October 9th.
The timeline in the court filing lists July 2019 as the beginning of construction on the new jail, with completion in February 2021. The Sheriff's Department will begin occupying the jail in March, and the jail will be fully functional in April 2021.
According to the court filing, the Commissioners have selected the site of the former International Paper Plant as the location for the jail, a site which is owned by Vigo County but inside the city limits of Terre Haute.
Commissioners are seeking a variance from the Vigo County Board of Zoning Appeals to construct at this proposed site and have a hearing on the variance scheduled for November 14th.
County Commissioner Judy Anderson says they will point towards the hiring of new jail staff positions as a show of progress when meeting with the magistrate next week.
The filing states that the Commissioners and the City of Terre Haute have sought an outside legal opinion to determine if the variance is appropriate, or if they will have to file a rezoning petition, which would be approved by the Terre Haute City Council. That opinion is expected later this month.
