A late morning fire took neighbors by surprise, but that didn’t stop them from taking action.
It happened at the Maryland School Apartments on Springhill Road in Terre Haute. There is a fire station just a couple blocks away from the apartment complex. First responders arrived quickly and were able to douse the flames in short order.
“Engine 92, which is just two blocks down the street arrived, and was able to make a quick attack on the fire and was able to knock the fire down with one line in about a minute or two,” said Will Frankel, Battalion Chief with Honey Creek Fire Department.
A man and woman inside the apartment escaped with the help of a visiting neighbor. Aaron Wells used a barbecue grill to break a window and help pull the victims out of the burning apartment. “The most scariest thing, like they’re just screaming ‘I love you’ to each other. Screaming that they think they’re going to die. And like it was just like something, like a movie,” said Wells.
The two victims did suffer severe burns and were taken to a local hospital. The man told police he was molding plastic for his car inside the apartment and that may have started the fire. An investigation will determine the exact cause.
