Local who people who suffer traumatic injuries now have access to a new level of care.
Union Hospital announced Tuesday that it has been verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 3 Trauma Center.
It’s the first hospital in the Terre Haute area to receive that verification by the college.
Hospital officials say it means they now have lots of resources available to trauma patients.
For example, they’ll have trauma surgeon for that patient within 30 minutes of arrival. Officials say the availability of care during the “golden hour” is life saving.
“Mortality rates decrease. They have better outcomes, less complication rates. Seeing that trauma surgeon sooner has quality outcomes for those patients with critical injuries,” says Michelle Ritchey, the Trauma Program Manager at Union Hospital.
The hospital says the accomplishment is thanks to the hard work of several departments.
The verification is a process that takes several years. It’s good for three years and will be reviewed again in 2020.
