Three dead in multiple vehicle crash on I-70 near Effingham

EFFINGHAM, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Three people are dead after a multiple vehicle crash on I-70 near Effingham Saturday morning.

Illinois State Police released the names of the deceased in a press releast Sunday.

The release states that preliminary investigation indicates all vehicles involved were traveling on I-70 eastbound in a construction zone when traffic came to a stop.

The driver of a white Freightliner, Asllan Pino of Chesterfield, MI, failed to reduce speed and struck the rear of a black GMC Yukon.

The driver of the Yukon, Virginia Abrams of Wildwood, MO, passed away along with two of her passengers, Mathew Murphy and Marleen Murphy, both also of Wildwood.

A passenger in the Freightliner and two other passengers in the Yukon were taken to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL, with injuries.

A third and fourth vehicle were involved in the crash after being hit by the Freightliner, but no one was seriously injured in either of those vehicles.

Pino was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
