THFD asks residents to refrain from burning leaves

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Terre Haute Fire Department has asked residents to remain from burning leaves this season.

According to city ordinance, you cannot burn leaves within city limits.

Fumes from the leaves can irritate those with respiratory problems and could even lead to a fire.

In order to discourage leaf burning, the city does have some options for residents.

“Terre Haute Fire Department offers leaf bags. You bag them up, put them by your dumpster and your normal trash pick-up will pick them up,” said Deputy Fire Marshal Trevor Kelsheimer. “Or you can rake them by the curb and the street service will come and pick those up for you.”

Those in violation of the Terre Haute ordinance will receive a citation and could face up to a $250 fine.
