Terre Haute’s Haunted History

News

Is Terre Haute really haunted? Are there ghosts of our ancestors hanging out around town?  A new tour hopes to solve those questions and more.

On Friday and Saturday nights, this is where you will find Terre Haute native Ashley Hood, walking around and sharing the stories of the town she loves.

“For what’s a 90 minute tour actually started from like 400 pages of research,” Ashley Hood said. “So the fact that I have managed to dwindle it down to 90 minutes is pretty good because I could do a 3 hour tour but I don’t think anyone has the attention span for that so.”

Hood is the founder of “Tell-Tale Tours,” Terre Haute’s first ghost tour.

The tour gives ghost hunters and history buffs alike a chance to learn and experience the city’s haunted and dark past.

“I think that when people come downtown you spend so much time driving around Terre Haute, that you don’t every look at the buildings around you and you don’t think of the history and you don’t really take in the architecture,” Hood said. “But when you actually get the chance to walk around in downtown Terre Haute and look at the buildings and look at the architecture and learn about the history it kind of brings it alive for you and hope spark some interest in people as well.”

Since  the tour has been in operation, people from across the state have flocked to the city .

So what kind of creepy and mysterious tales are associated with Terre Haute.

You may be surprised with what spirits lurk in the shadows.

From hangings, to unmarked graves, to murders, the 90 minute tour is packed with rich characters that will leave you screaming for more.

“I want to let folks know it’s not going to be one of those things on my tour where I have stage actors that are going to jump out at you,” Hood said. “We are not going to do any of that. If you do see something that spooks you, it’s going to be real paranormal activity.”
