Terre Haute Mothers Start “Shush Free” Church Service

Musical instruments, name tags and an audience– they’re all part of Rejoicing Spirits church service by Mosaic.

Brenda Tryon works at Mosaic, an agency that helps the intellectually disabled.

She says it was difficult to go to church with her son, Jeshaiah Gordon, since he lived in a group home.

So, she decided to bring Mosaic’s national program Rejoicing Spirits to Terre Haute.

She worked with the Reverend Dawn Carlson and two years later, the the first service was held.
“We love the fact that this is set up as what we call a Shush Free Worship.  If you want to run laps while we’re doing it, that’s okay with us.  But, it’s very relaxed and open and it’s whatever they need,” explains Rev. Dawn Carlson, with Rejoicing Spirits.

There’s lot of singing, as well as as help from the congregation in a service that allows them to be them.
“They’re able to interact in the service versus just listen– sit and be quiet and listen.  That’s not always easy for some of our individuals to do.  So, they’re able to participate in that service, which is then very meaningful to them,” says Tryon, who works in community relations at Mosaic.

Rejoicing Spirits meets at 2 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month.

If you’d like more information on the service or you would like to attend, call Brenda Tryon, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at (912) 235-3399.
