Terre Haute man in critical condition following motorcycle crash

VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) –  A Terre Haute man is in critical condition after a deer ran in front of the motorcycle he was driving Tuesday night in Vermillion County.

According to the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department, at approximately 9 p.m. Tuesday, Danny Joe Smith, Jr., 25 of Terre Haute, was traveling south on State Road 63 with his wife, Rachael Smith, when a deer ran out in front of them. Witnesses stated that Danny swerved to miss the deer, and then lost control of the motorcycle, causing it to flip over.  

Danny was flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he remains in critical condition. Rachael was taken to Union Hospital in Terre Haute.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, Rachael was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident; however, Danny was not.
