TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Terre Haute Firefighter died Sunday morning of COVID-19 complications.

John Schoffstall was a 11-year veteran of the Terre Haute Fire Department. 2020 would have been his 12th year with the department.

On Sunday morning, the Terre Haute Fire Department escorted Schoffstall’s body from Union Hospital to Fitzpatrick Funeral Home in West Terre Haute.

Terre Haute Fire Chief Jeff Fisher said Schoffstall was well-respected among his peers and in the community.

“You know John had your back. He was very capable of doing the job. He was big guy, he was a strong guy. So there’s no question that if it come down to it, John was able to do the job properly and you know that you were safe with him,” he said.

Schoffstall was 41 years old.
