Terre Haute family delivers newborn in the bathroom

TERRE HAUTE, Ind., (WTWO/WAWV)– Georgia Buchanan and Xavier Humes welcomed their son Jaden on Jan. 23 after Buchanan unexpectedly delivered him in their bathroom.

Humes said it started out as a normal day for them until Georgia let him know something was different.

“I was waking up getting ready for work and everything. I had just hopped out the shower. When I got out, as I was brushing my teeth, she walked into the bathroom with me hurled over in pain, telling me she’s having braxton hicks or what she thought was Braxton Hicks,” said Humes.

Buchanan said she didn’t think she was in labor because this was pain that she had experienced before when she was pregnant with her daughter.

“So I’m like, ‘there is no way these are real contractions. I’m making him lunch. It’s a normal morning. I’m just in pain,'” she said. “I wasn’t trying to go to the hospital at all because I thought we were going to get there and they were going to be like ‘Oh it’s fake. Go home.’ I’ve had a lot of episodes like that.”

Humes said Buchanan almost convinced him that it was just Braxton Hicks. He decided to go to work but then chose to turn back around.

“Something hits me like God is telling me ‘No you can’t leave.’ You got to come back in here and make sure that everything is good,” said Humes.

He said he knew then that he had to make a quick decision.

“She screams again and I run into the bathroom and boom there’s his head. I’m like okay we don’t have enough time for an ambulance, we have to do this here,” Humes said.

He said he then went to get more help which happened to be a fire station across the street from their house.

“I didn’t even say anything. I just hurried up and passed him to her and took off to the fire station,” said Humes.

Josh Smith, one of the firefighters at the scene, said he’s only seen this twice during his five years as a paramedic firefighter.

“When you’re there, you’re in the zone. You’re just doing your job. But afterwards we come back to the fire house and all you can think is wow that’s a way to start your day by delivering a baby,” Smith said.

Baby Jaden weighed 7 pounds and 11 ounces and was 19 inches long.
